Surgery with the most benefits – including reducing your pet’s risk for certain health issues.
Spay and neutering not only alters your pet’s ability to reproduce but helps prolong their life as well. Studies show that pets who are spayed or neutered tend to live longer lives than ones who are not. This is because they are less likely to develop cancers of the reproductive organs. If you’re interested in having your pet spayed or neutered, please contact us at 416-941-8920.
Pets who aren’t spayed or neutered have a higher risk of developing cancers of the reproductive organs. For example, female pets have a greater chance of developing uterine or mammary gland cancer if they are not spayed. Male pets are more likely to develop testicular cancer if they are not neutered. Pregnancy can be especially difficult on female pet’s bodies so removing their ability to reproduce removes any potential strain. Studies also show pets who’ve had the procedure tend to live longer lives.
Your pet’s surgery will take place in one of our surgical suites. As an anxiety-free practice, we want to make sure your pet is as comfortable as possible. For your female pet, we make an incision in the abdomen to remove their uterus, ovaries and fallopian tube. This removes their ability to reproduce and also minimizes any typical behaviour they might have experienced while in heat. For male pets, their testicles are removed. This stops their ability to impregnate and limits instinctual breeding behaviours like humping.
We do our best to mitigate any risks associated with the procedure by following comprehensive surgical protocols. For example, since your pet will be under general anesthesia, we do pre-surgery testing to ensure your pet will react well to the medicine. Also, we have a dedicated team of veterinary technical assistants who will monitor your pet’s vitals throughout the procedure to ensure they are responding well.
